Step 1: Primary Source Verification (PSV)

Before you can sit for any exams or apply for any jobs, the Australian Medical Council (AMC) must independently verify that your medical degree is authentic. Your medical school must also be listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS).

The Process:

1. AMC Portfolio: You must first create an AMC candidate account and establish your AMC portfolio.

2. MyIntealth / EPIC: The AMC utilizes the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) for verification. You must establish a MyIntealth account and an EPIC portfolio.

3. Verification: You upload your primary medical qualifications to EPIC, which verifies them directly with your issuing university and sends a specialized EPIC report back to the AMC.

Step 2: The AMC CAT MCQ Examination

Once your qualifications are verified, you face the first major bottleneck: the Australian Medical Council Computer Adaptive Test Multiple Choice Question (AMC CAT MCQ) exam.

This exam tests your knowledge of general practice, internal medicine, paediatrics, psychiatry, surgery, and obstetrics and gynaecology—strictly at the level expected of an Australian medical graduate entering their intern year.

The 2026 Reality: In 2026, the AMC implemented a slight increase to the underlying pass standard for the MCQ examination to match updated benchmarks from Australian medical schools. While the reporting scale remains 0–500 (with a pass mark of 250), the margin for error is tighter.

Step 3: The Practical Assessment (Clinical Exam vs. WBA)

After passing the MCQ, you must prove your hands-on clinical competency to obtain the official AMC Certificate. You have two options, though one is far more common than the other.

Option A: The AMC Clinical Examination (The Standard Route) The vast majority of IMGs take this route. It is a 16-station Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) that assesses your ability to take histories, conduct physical examinations, formulate management plans, and—crucially—communicate with patients and their families safely and empathetically.

Option B: Workplace-Based Assessment (WBA) Instead of sitting the AMC Clinical Exam, you can opt to be assessed on the job over a 6 to 12-month period by an AMC-accredited WBA provider.

• The Catch: Places in WBA programs are incredibly limited. You must secure a job at one of the very few accredited hospitals in Australia before you can even apply for this option.

Step 4: Securing a Job and The PESCI

With your AMC MCQ passed, you are eligible to apply for medical jobs in Australia. Because of the Section 19AB moratorium, these will typically be in regional areas, public hospitals, or "Area of Need" positions.

The PESCI Requirement: If you secure an offer to work in General Practice or primary care, you cannot simply start working. You must first pass a Pre-Employment Structured Clinical Interview (PESCI). Conducted by bodies like the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP), this interview evaluates whether your specific clinical skills, experience, and communication style are safe and appropriate for that exact job in that exact location.

Step 5: Registration and Supervised Practice

You do not immediately get "General Registration" upon arriving in Australia. You must first complete a mandatory period of supervised practice.

Which Registration Do You Apply For?

• Provisional Registration: You apply for this if you have successfully passed both the AMC CAT MCQ and the AMC Clinical Examination.

• Limited Registration: You apply for this if you have passed the AMC CAT MCQ and secured a job offer, but have not yet passed the AMC Clinical Exam. You will complete your clinical exam while working under this registration.

The 12-Month Crucible: Regardless of which registration you hold, you must complete 12 months (a minimum of 47 weeks full-time equivalent) of supervised practice. You must submit a supervised practice plan, undergo an orientation to the Australian health system, and have your performance regularly reported to the Medical Board by your approved supervisor.

Once your 12 months are successfully completed, your supervisor signs off on your competency, and you are finally eligible to apply for General Registration, granting you independent practice rights across Australia.
